XMAS WITHOUT CHINA premiered at SXSW this year, where Pulitzer Prize-winning James V. Grimaldi of The Wall Street Journal called the film “a surprising, sweet, funny documentary that provokes without sermons.” (March 10, 2013). The film has played in festivals in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, where it won BEST COMEDY at the Friars Club Comedy Film Festival, and recently in Telluride, where it sold out its scheduled screenings, prompting the MountainFilm Festival to add an additional screening that also sold out!

We were invited to the Chicken & Egg Pictures Editing Workshop – From Rough to Fine Cut, which was great for the feedback, but also for the camaraderie with the other filmmakers in the room, including from veteran documentary editor Mary Manhardt Judith Helfand and Iyabo Boyd from Chicken & Egg, and the filmmakers from The New Black, Fighting Kites and Breaking the Code. They confirmed it: we’re nearly there with Xmas Without China!
We were invited to the 2012 REEL ECONOMY Residency in Washington D.C.! Put on by the good people at Working Films, Chicken & Egg Pictures and the Fledgling Fund, we were thrilled to join the residency, where we shared our documentary with a group of other awesome filmmakers and non-profit organizations, and worked to develop strategies for outreach and engagement around the economic issues that unite us.
Alicia Dwyer was featured in a Beyond The Box blog post about crowd-funding. Check out the story here.
We have moved into a new office! Located right in the heart of Echo Park, we are feverishly working toward finishing the final edit of the film!
We are also delighted to report that we have received an “I Believe In You” grant commitment from Chicken & Egg Pictures, who are “dedicated to supporting women filmmakers who are as passionate about the craft of storytelling as they are about the social justice, environmental and human rights issues they’re embracing, translating and exploring on film.”
